Stop Treating your Computer like a Rental Car

I got an email recently from a small business owner who complained that his notebook PC for work was running really slow and acting kind of funny. He asked me what I would first look at if it were me. I always get a little hesitant because the next few questions make me a hero or a bum. “When was your last backup?” I start out. Yep, the crickets are chirping in the background. “Are your Windows updates current?” More crickets. “Do you have anti-virus and anti-malware software and is it also current?” That is generally the third strike. If you don’t stop treating your computer like a rental car, it will behave just like one in no time.

The Myth of the Instant Internet Business

There are a large number of people looking to become wealthy selling stuff online. I can tell you from personal experience that this is true. I once taught a session on internet marketing and had a participant tell me she had spent over $10,000 on internet related marketing courses and had sold nothing. She is not alone, every day I get marketing plan offers, blue prints to online wealth, 24 hour programs to help me make $3,454.13 with push button, auto pilot stealth software. It is all a myth. I will not apologize for telling you because now you have no excuse. Thomas Edison said it like this, "I never did anything by accident, nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came by work."

Your online efforts are no different, and even if you are already neck deep in Pay Per Click, Email Marketing, and Facebook fan pages you can adjust or season to taste. At some point in time everyone has want to show someone else what they were doing on the computer. Maybe you want to show your mom how to sign up for a Gmail account, or demonstrate to a class how to create a document in Microsoft Word, or maybe to show technical support an error you get when using a program. Marketing people, school students, business executives, and almost everyone in between at some point wishes they had a screen capturing software. Today I offer you the three that I use and recommend.

Try Out a New Operating System or Rescue Your Current One

I can’t count how often people have called me when they have a computer problem and need me to help them rescue their pictures and music files from a “messed up” personal computer. Today I want to share with you a technique I use to try and rescue files from a technology that got me started on open source operating systems. Not only is this process good for helping rescue your computer files in the event of a virus or malware that keeps you from starting your PC, it can also let you test drive a new operating system.
